in New
YorkAmerican composer. At the age of 14 he enterede the Curtis Institute
in Philadelphia, where he studied composition with Rosario Scalero, and
where from 1931 to 1933 he taught the piano. From then he earned his
living from the music. The opulent, openly Romantic style of his early
works is well shown in the String Quartet in B minor(1936),whose slow
movement, orchestrated as the Adagio for Strings, quickly gained wide
popularity.Much of Barber's best music is to be found in his vocal
works, which include two operas introduced at the Metropolitan in New
York,'Vanessa'(1958) and 'Antony and Cleopatra'(1966).

"I was meant to be a composer and will be I'm sure."
"Every day of his life Barber played or studied the music of J.S. Bach.
He also loved Brahms from whom he learned how to compress profound
emotions in small and expanding modules of highly charged musical
expression (Cello Sonata, 1932). " (Samuel Barber: An Improvisatory

"In this
1966 Decca recording, Raya Garbousova (1909-1997) performs the second
movement the Barber Cello concerto, Op. 22 -- a work that was Barber
wrote for her, and which she premiered with Serge Koussevitzky and the
Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1946. In this performance -- the first
issued on an LP -- Garbousova is joined by the Music Aeterna Orchestra,
conducted by Frederic Waldman. "
Samuel Barber - Souvenirs Op.28, III. Pas De Deux
"Souvenirs (1952) is a different story. Written as a four-hand piece
for his friend Charles Turner and himself to amuse their friends, it
eventually became a scintillating New York City Ballet score. Here
nostalgia is wedded to gentle humor. The plush age of Edith Wharton’s
old New York is epitomized. Barber revelled in the ambiance of the color
and lifestyle of the disappearing luxury hotels of Europe and America —
particularly the Plaza. When he was in New York he often went there for
afternoon tea just to hear the continental trio perform the sugary
music of the turn of the century, music that embodied the aura of an
earlier America he loved. (Barber had his gather-round-the-piano side.)"

Adagio for Strings
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adagio for Strings is a work by Samuel Barber, arranged for string
orchestra from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11. Barber
finished the arrangement in 1936, the same year as he wrote the
quartet. It was performed for the first time in 1938, in a radio
broadcast from a New York studio attended by an invited audience,
conducted by Arturo Toscanini, who also took the piece on tour to Europe
and South America. It is disputed whether the first performance in
Europe was conducted by Toscanini or Henry Wood. Its reception was
generally positive, with Alexander J. Morin writing that Adagio for
Strings is "full of pathos and cathartic passion" and that it "rarely
leaves a dry eye."[1] The piece can be heard in many TV shows and
movies. It begins with a B flat played by violins, leading to the lower
strings' entrance. The rhythm is mainly compressed with sustained notes,
and Barber uses some unusual time signatures including 4/2, 5/2, 6/4,
and 3/2.[2]While Barber rejected many arrangements published by G.
Schirmer, such as the organ arrangement by William
Strickland,[clarification needed] in 1967 he did transcribe the piece
for eight-part choir as a setting of the Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God").[2]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adagio_for_Strings
