Πολύ πριν τον Μπερλιοζ ο Μότσαρτ θεωρούσε τον λόγο απλή "υπάκουη κόρη" της μουσικής, όπως φαίνεται στο παρακάτω απόσπασμα:
"Music should reign supreme and make one forget everything else.... In an operait is absolutely necessary that Poetry should be Music's obedient
daughter"
(Letter to his father, 13 October, 1781).

Μάλιστα θεωρώντας ελάχιστα πιθανό να επιτύχει κάτι τέτοιο ο Μότσαρτ σκεφτόταν σοβαρά το 1778 να εγκαταλείψει την φόρμα της όπερας και να βάλει στη θέση της ένα είδος μελοδράματος (του οποίου ήδη ο Ρουσσώ είχε δώσει ένα παραδειγμα το 1773) που αποκαλούσε "duodrama" .
Στο duodrama η μουσική και η ποιηση ΄σχετίζονταν χωρίς να εξαρτώνται η μια από την άλλη , κινούμενες πλαι πάι σε δύο παράλληλους δρόμους, όπως αναφέρει σε γραμμα του στις 12 Νοεμβρίου τπυ 1778

(... Και δε μου φαινεται να εχει αδικο... Ας θυμηθούμε για παραδειγμα όλες τις απίθανες "εκδοχες" του ύμνου της 9ης... Ποτε δεν μπορεσαν να "σκοτωσουν" το μεγαλείο του. )

A great piece of music is beautiful regardless of how it is performed. Any prelude or fugue of Bach can be played at any tempo, with or without rhythmic nuances, and it will still be great music. That’s how music should be written, so that no-one, no matter how philistine, can ruin it.
