MARCHES No 2
Soldiers'Chorus from FAUST
Composer:CHARLES GOUNOD
Born in 1818 Charles Gounod entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1836 to study composition. In 1839 he won the Prix de Rome and whilst in Rome he met Pauline Viardot who,by promising to sing the title role in his first opera 'Sappho'was a failure but it had given Gounod his chance and a number of new operas
appeared in rapid succession including 'Faust',which was an immediate success. It became one of the most popular operas ever written, appearing in the CoventGarden season every year from 1863 to 1911.In the 70 years followed its composition it received no fewer than 2,000 performances in Paris alone! The rousing 'Soldiers' Chorus is from Act 4.

Tchaikovsky - Marche Slave
http://youtu.be/5poSw7tFLB4
In 1876 Serbia was in the middle of a war with Turkey and large numbers of Slavic troops were fighting on the side of Serbia.Russia was meanwhile making plans to officially declare war on Turkey in 1877.Nicolai Rubinstein,as director of the Moscow Conservatory, asked Tchaikovsky to write 'Marche Slave'for a concert which he was organising for returning wounded soldiers. The march, which expressed in music the patriotic feelings which were prevalent in Moscow at that time, was a triumphant success.
MARCHES No 1
Marche Solennelle
Marche Solennelle started out as the Marche Of The Jurists and later changed its title.Tchaikovsky possibly used the march form in his important works more often than any othe great composer. The ballets'Nutcracker'and 'Swan Lake',the Second('Little Russian')and the Sixth Symphonies all have examples of the march.
