12 Σπουδές, απο τα τελευταία αριστουργηματικά έργα του Debussy
και με μεγάλες πιανιστικές απαιτήσεις
*The pieces are extremely difficult to play, as Debussy himself admitted, describing them as "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands"
*Together with the Chopin and Liszt etudes, the 12 Etudes of Debussy, composed in 1915, belong to the absolute top of the Etude repertoire. Besides being musical tone poems, with moods varying from tenderly introspective to ferocious, these Etudes deal with a variety of technical problems like scales, arpeggios, thirds, quarts, sixths, and so on. Debussy was very aware these pieces were to occupy a place of their own, and gleefully intended them as 'a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands'.
Indeed the unusual combination of musical and technical problems make these Etudes, which are fittingly dedicated to the memory of Frédéric Chopin, the realm of the greatest of pianists only.
The pieces are extremely difficult to play, as Debussy himself admitted, describing them as "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands"

"It was intended to be a ballet, or “danced poem,” as the composer put it; the May 1913 premiere was produced by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and choreographed by Nijinsky, the same company which famously premiered Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps exactly two weeks later—an event which served to obscure Debussy’s masterpiece for decades to come.
Diaghilev originally wanted the ballet to involve a homosexual encounter between three men, while Nijinsky lobbied for the inclusion of an airplane crash. Eventually the two settled on something somewhat different. It was described to the audience thus:
The scene is a garden at dusk; a tennis ball has been lost; a boy and two girls are searching for it. The artificial light of the large electric lamps shedding fantastic rays about them suggests the idea of childish games: they play hide and seek, they try to catch one another, they quarrel, they sulk without cause. The night is warm, the sky is bathed in pale light; they embrace. But the spell is broken by another tennis ball thrown in mischievously by an unknown hand. Surprised and alarmed, the boy and girls disappear into the nocturnal depths of the garden.
Debussy was underwhelmed by this scenario, but quickly consented when Diaghilev doubled his commission (10,000 gold francs). "

The Sea - Kahlil Gibran
In the still of the night
As man slumbers behind the folds,
the forest proclaims:
"I am the power
Brought by the sun from
The heart of the earth."
The sea remains quiet, saying to itself,
"I am the power."
The rock says,
"The ages erected me as a monument
Until the Judgment Day."
The sea remains silent saying to itself,
"I am the monument."
The wind howls
"I am strong,
I separate the heavens from the earth."
The sea remains quiet, saying to itself,
"The wind is mine."
The river says
"I am the pure water
That quenches the thirst of the earth."
The sea remains silent saying to itself,
"The river is mine."
The summit says,
"I stand high like a star
In the center of the sky."
The sea remains quiet saying to itself,
"The summit is mine."
The brain says,
"I am a ruler;
The world is in those who rule."'
The sea remains slumbering saying, in its sleep, "All is mine."

Debussy /Sviatoslav Richter: Estampes (all 3 movements)
Debussy : Estampes (composed 1903)
- Pagodes (Pagodas) /takes us to Asia
- La soirée dans Grenade (Evening in Granada)/takes
us to Spain
-Jardins sous la pluie (Gardens in the rain)
references two French children’s songs, Dodo,
l'enfant do (“Sleep, child, sleep”) and Nous n'irons
plus au bois (“We'll go no more to the woods”).
In a letter to a friend, Debussy referred to Estampes as sort of an imaginary vacation: "When you don't have any money to go on holiday, you must make do by using your imagination". "Estampes" means print or engraving, and these three pieces are musical depictions of particular moments at particular locales. They also represent an interior journey of sorts, a newly personal idiom for Debussy, who is now seemingly unconcerned with the conventions and expectations of the salon and the concert hall. The work is dedicated to Jacques Émile Blanche (1861-1942), the French painter best known for portraits of literary authors.
‎"At the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889, Debussy had witnessed a Javanese gamelan orchestra, with its metallic percussion instruments and rhythmically hypnotic music. The pentatonic flavour of Pagodes, the first of the Estampes, may not be strictly Javanese, but the impression of differently pitched metallic percussion instruments is well conveyed."

La soirée dans Grenade
It opens quietly, rhythms and thematic bits suggesting nocturnal Spain. Gradually, the music turns livelier, especially with the introduction of a rising rhythmic motif appearing in the outer sections of the work. The main theme appears at last, a festive, proud creation that calls to mind gaudy colors, lively dancers, and romance under a setting sun. It is elegant and graceful, but subtly sensual and alluring, especially as its succeeding music softens and reverts to more nocturnal moods. This colorful, five-minute piece ends after two brief, galloping episodes yield to the serenity of the evening.
Jardins sous la pluie
Jardins sous la pluie (Gardens in the rain) is a typical Debussy piece in the sense that it is characteristic of his Impressionism, evoking a vivid sense of the scene suggested by the title in brilliant colors—one can almost hear the raindrops pelting the foliage, almost feel them on one's head while racing toward shelter. Debussy had a keen sense for capturing nature scenes and this piece evidences that ingenious talent.

Jacques-Emile Blanche Debussy (1903) | Oil Painting Reproduction
Jardins sous la Pluie - Gardens in the Rain, was apparently inspired by a scene described by the painter Jacques-Emile Blanche as he painted a portrait of the composer one rainy afternoon: "I was in Auteuil, out of doors, and sketched an initial study of his head. It started to rain, and the trees gave his face a greenish tinge which the rain seemed to cover as though with enamel."
